Program Description

Join us for a hands-on training day to support our Adaptive Kayaking Programs! This immersive experience will equip you with the knowledge and skills to support adventurers of all abilities—both on and off the water. Set against the scenic backdrop of Lake James, the day blends meaningful learning with community building and plenty of time on the lake. Below is a sample schedule of the day:

9:00AM-11:00AM CAP Sauce Training: CAP stands for Community, Access, and Preparation—the three core ingredients in every Waypoint Adventure program. This session will introduce you to our signature approach to inclusion, showing why these elements are essential for creating accessible adventures. You’ll gain practical strategies for applying CAP principles in your own work.

11:00AM-12:00pm Introduction to Adaptive Gear: Learn about the various types of adaptive kayaking equipment we use. We’ll walk through their purposes, demonstrate how they function, and give you a chance to explore and ask questions.

12:00pm - 12:45pm Lunch Break: Please bring a packed lunch. While Marion (the nearest town with food options) is about 20 minutes away, we encourage everyone to stay on-site and enjoy a relaxed picnic—either as a group or on your own by the lake.

12:45PM-2:30PM Let's go Kayaking! Time to get on the water! Most of our kayaks are tandems, and you’ll be paired with a partner to paddle together. We’ll outfit boats with adaptive features so you can experience how they work first-hand. There will be opportunities to switch setups and try different configurations throughout the session.
